Treatment Options for Summer Allergies

Summer is almost here and If you are experiencing allergies, we have a solution for you. After a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Neil Goldhaber, you will know exactly what is causing your allergies and you will have a treatment plan that will help relieve your symptoms as quickly as possible. This article will cover the some of the most commonly prescribed treatment options that may be included in your customized plan.

Corticosteroid Nasal Sprays

Corticosteroid nasal sprays quickly decrease inflammation and swelling in the sinuses to provide fast acting symptom relief. Sprays may be prescribed for frequent use over the course of a few days, or on an as-needed basis. Dr. Goldhaber works with patients to determine which spray is best for their allergies.

Commonly used prescription sprays include Beconase, Dymista, and Nasonex. Over-the-counter sprays that a specialist may recommend include Flonase, Nasacort, and Rhinocort. Sprays are easy to use and rarely procedure side effects.

Anti-Histamines

Anti-histamines block histamine, a chemical that the body releases during an allergic response. Anti-histamines come in oral and spray forms. When prescribed as a spray, anti-histamines are especially effective at improving allergy symptoms, most commonly itchy and watery eyes and sneezing, without causing drowsiness. Many patients like spray anti-histamines because they can be used during the day.

Oral antihistamines may be the right treatment option for some patients as well. Oral antihistamines may be taken during the day if they don’t cause drowsiness and at night to help patients sleep. Commonly prescribed oral anti-histamines are Zyrtec, Benadryl, Allegra, Clarinex, and Claritin.

Allergy Trigger Avoidance

After Dr. Goldhaber determines what is triggering allergies, he gives specific recommendations regarding how to avoid it. Common recommendations include the following:

  • Keeping house and car windows closed
  • Washing clothes immediately after coming home
  • Avoiding certain outdoor areas

Patients who adhere to this advice often see a quick decrease in symptoms. Avoiding allergy triggers can be great when combined with other treatment options or used alone.
